I’ve either used these rods myself or personally know other guides and anglers who fish with them. For this review, I tested the best fly fishing rods for beginners across all angling applications-from bass and trout to salmon and steelhead-so you can spend more time fishing and less time choosing a rod. With so many great options for beginner fly rods, it might seem intimidating to find one that works for you. Best for Streamer Fishing: Redington Vice 9’ 6-weight.Best for Steelhead: Orvis Clearwater 13’ 7-weight.Best for Saltwater: Echo Boost Blue 9’ 8-weight.Best for Euro Nymphing: Cortland Nymph Series 10’6” 3-weight. ![]() Best for Trout: Douglas LRS 9’ 5-weight.When it comes to the best fly fishing rods for beginners, there are more options now than when I started fly fishing 20 years ago, and many of them outperform their prices. And fly rods at every price point have only become better. Honey Lamiglas rod with all-aluminum reel seat, cigar grip, and candy-apple red, black, and white wraps.I’ve been reviewing fly rods, fly reels, and other gear for the better part of a decade. The wraps are sunburst with dark brown trim. ![]() Rods are available in the following lengths:ħ'6" Honey Lamiglas build in aluminum down-locking reelseat with cocobolo wood spacer and hand-turned 6" cigar grip. The grips are of AAAA grade cork, and the guides are chrome coated stainless steel. Components include cap and ring, down-locking and up-locking aluminum reel seats. They are 2 piece with tip over butt ferrules. Honey Lamiglas blanks are manufactured in the USA. Best for casts under 50 feet, these rods are a different casting experience and very relaxing for the person who wants to get away from the “rat-race.” These rods have a powerful butt section with a full-flexing tip that surprises graphite anglers with its deep flexing accuracy. Lamiglas honey e-glass blanks remain full-flexing and slow action demanding a very relaxed stroke. Honey Lamiglas 7'6" #4 weight with uplocking U元 reel seat ![]() I can, however, provide custom builds with just about any guides, reel seat, and grip style you might imagine. Some, you cannot buy as a finished rod from the big manufacturers, or cannot get them with custom changes. These are tried and true off-the-shelf blanks supplied to rod builders. This year I am offering s-glass models by Livingston: Western Glass in 8’6,” line weights 5, and 6 YS Glass in 9,' #3 line weight. My e-glass builds include blanks from such manufacturers as Lamiglas, Batson SPG small stream glass, Jenkins PLG, and “Klassic” small stream glass. Two types of glass are now available: the slow-to-medium action e-glass, and the newly derived, and slightly faster, s-glass. There always remained a few manufacturers who continued to make fiberglass rod blanks (mostly small companies), and as they increased sales to rod builders, other manufacturers reintroduced fiberglass as well. The flexibility of fiberglass also protects delicate tippets and improves hook-ups with fewer lost fish. These anglers realize that fiberglass provides better line control, and delicacy of presentation. The resurgence in fiberglass fly rods is a direct result of many anglers rejecting the whiplash action of graphite for the smoother casting feedback action of fiberglass rods.
